Storage and Stability: Keeping Reference Materials Intact

Peptide stability is a function of how the material is stored. The same reference standard can remain usable for a long period or degrade within weeks depending entirely on temperature, exposure to light, and moisture control.

Lyophilized (powder) form

In its freeze-dried state a peptide is at its most stable because water — the main driver of hydrolysis — has been removed. For long-term storage, keep sealed vials in a freezer, protected from light. For short handling windows, refrigeration is acceptable. Always minimise the number of freeze–thaw cycles.

Reconstituted (solution) form

Once in solution the clock speeds up. Store the reconstituted vial refrigerated, shielded from light, and plan to use it within the window appropriate to that sequence. Some peptides are stable in solution for a couple of weeks; others noticeably less.

Three enemies of stability

  • Heat accelerates chemical breakdown of the peptide bond.
  • Light can drive oxidation of sensitive residues.
  • Moisture reintroduces the hydrolysis that lyophilization was designed to prevent.

Practical bench habits

Label every vial with the reconstitution date. Aliquot where repeated access would otherwise mean repeated warming. Return material to cold storage promptly rather than leaving it on the bench between measurements.
