The phrase “research use only” (RUO) appears on every vial for a reason. It defines both the intended purpose of the material and the obligations of whoever handles it.
Intended purpose
RUO materials are supplied strictly for in-vitro laboratory and research applications. They are not drugs, supplements, cosmetics or food, and are not intended for human or veterinary consumption or for any therapeutic, diagnostic or preventive purpose.
Why the designation exists
Reference standards are manufactured and documented to support research, not to meet the very different regulatory requirements that govern products for consumption. The RUO label makes that boundary explicit.
Purchaser responsibility
By buying RUO material you represent that you are a qualified researcher or institution and that you will handle it in accordance with all applicable local, state and federal laws.
Handling accordingly
Treat RUO materials with the same care you would any laboratory chemical: appropriate storage, documentation, and disposal. The designation is a compliance boundary, not a formality.
Research use only.
