Lyophilized reference materials are fine, lightweight powders. Handling them safely protects both the integrity of the sample and the person at the bench.
Personal protection
Wear gloves and eye protection appropriate to your laboratory’s policy. Avoid generating dust when opening vials, and never handle powders near air currents that could disperse them.
Sharps discipline
Reconstitution frequently involves needles. Use a designated sharps container, never re-cap by hand where it can be avoided, and dispose of needles immediately after use.
Spills and clean-up
Have a clean-up procedure ready before you start. Contain any spill, clean the area with appropriate materials, and document the incident per your lab’s protocol.
Diluent awareness
Some diluents contain preservatives such as benzyl alcohol. Read the diluent’s own handling information and store it correctly.
Disposal
Dispose of unused material, solutions and consumables in line with local regulations for laboratory waste.
